Mom's (Ellen's) Bar Mitzvah Speech to Zack
Zack, it's hard to believe this day has finally arrived.
It seems like it was yesterday that we were at your bris imagining your Bar Mitzvah in the year 2000! (Here we are.)
You have worked so hard this year to get ready for today. You have amazed me with your willingness to make your lessons a priority. It is obvious that your efforts have paid off.
I've watched you grow from an adorable little boy with your thick head of hair, always a smile on your face, never without a book in your hand, to who you are today:
Still adorable, not so little, still smiling, books still in tow, shared with the discman, and the hair - well, given your genetics - grow it while you've got it.
You are, and have always been, an easy kid. Your birth was easy, your terrible two's lasted about a week, and even with the recent challenges in preparing for your Bar Mitzvah, it's been smooth sailing. You've always taken the path of least resistance.
You were into everything, dinosaurs, whales, dolphins, Batman, Tin-Tin, Ninja Turtles and Legos. As you got older, movies became a passion, but not ever sports - until the Giants clinched the pennant - that was the turning point. The point of no return, was when we waited in line with 500 people at Candlestick to have your head shaved by the Marines for free Giants tickets! Your enthusiasm even rubbed off on me, Zack. All of a sudden, I was going to the games. Even on Mother's Day. Did I ever thank you for that gift?
But it didn't end with baseball. Remember our one and only Niner's game, at the Stick, on a Monday night, against Green Bay, in the pouring rain? We stayed until the end and we lost. Seeing the sport through yours and Max's eyes, the anticipation, excitement and joy you both got from being there, was all worth it, wet tush and all.
Your bond with Max has always been there. You are a terrific older brother, even if Max can't appreciate it now. You have been a strong influence in his life. He can always count on you to be there for him. Watching your relationship grow has brought me great satisfaction and joy. You have a special connection with everyone here today. You touch everyone you meet.
Our family and friends have traveled far to celebrate with you.
It must be hard to imagine what this means to them, especially your grandparents, being the first grandson to become Bar Mitzvahed. Zack, you have been blessed with many gifts; intellectual curiosity, your sense of humor, an appreciation of music, an ability to communicate well with people of all ages, and insight - just to name a few.
No words can truly tell you how much I love you and how proud I am to be your mother.
The future is yours to embrace - do so wisely. Be true to yourself and to others. May you always remain the sweet, sensitive and caring person that you are. Know that I love + adore you.
